A major figure of ceramics in the intra-war period, Jean Besnard was taught by Paul Jacquet, a potter from the Savoy region, who was famous for making the ceramics of the designers Francis Jourdain and René Herbst. From 1923 on, Jean Besnard stood out for his “primitive” art. Among the eight pieces donated to the Musée des Arts décoratifs in 2003 by his family, the large vase known as African is typical of the most “unrefined” works of his first period.
